Blue Diamond

There are currently 1.2 billion people on earth who do not access to safe drinking water. For these people, water is so valuable that it can be likened to a blue diamond. Water is precious and all over the world people are searching for a technology which can easily produce clean water.
    Seawater desalination membrane
At present, the main method used for seawater desalination is to produce clean water by putting water under pressure on one side of the seawater desalination membrane. The size of the fine pores in the membrane separates the salt from the water. We are researching water movement and making various different membranes in order to improve the efficiency of this method for separating salt and water in seawater.

    • Groundwater toxic ion removal membrane
Groundwater contains toxic ions such as metallic ions and nitrate ions. An “electrodialysis method using ion exchange membranes” for the removal of toxic ions from the water environment is currently the subject of widespread research. At our laboratory we are researching a nitrate ion permselective membrane.

    • High contamination-resistant membrane
In electrodialysis processes using an ion exchange membrane, the membrane becomes contaminated by organic pollutants which adhere to its surface. This causes the function of the membrane to deteriorate. These contamination mechanisms require investigation if the contamination of the ion exchange membrane is to be prevented. We are therefore performing electrodialysis under various conditions and are using ion exchange membranes which have a variety of compositions, in order to investigate the contaminating behaviour of the organic pollutants which contaminate membranes.

    • Effluent purification membrane
Hollow fibre membranes are widely used for treating waste water and for saline water conversion. A hollow fibre membrane is a fibre like a straw with fine pores, and it has an advantage over a flat membrane because the effective membrane area is wider per unit volume.
